2009 PKLC Clubhouse, Inc.
Week 9 (August 10th – 14th)

SIZZLIN’ SCIENCE

Monday – Today we will start our week of science fun.  Each day we will have some fun projects for the children to participate in.  Today we will be making “Oil and Water” bags.  The children will color their water in their bag and add oil.  The teachers will talk to the children why oil and water do not mix and help the children conclude why that happens.  They will talk to the children about oil spills in the oceans and what happens to the plants and animals that live in the water.  The children will also make a fun art project by blowing colored bubbles with dish detergent in a bowl and then having the bubbles pop on paper.  This is a neat, but messy, art project so please dress accordingly.  Because of the projected hot weather for the week, please send a swimming suit, towel, and change of clothes to Clubhouse with your child as we will be running through the sprinklers as often as they desire.  Today we will be having scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast and fruit salad for snack.

Tuesday –  Today we will be spending a lot of time making our terrariums.  The children will first go outside on a walk to collect rocks and other items for the bottom of their terrariums.  Then they will add the dirt and other ingredients into their terrariums.  The teachers will talk to the children about terrariums, their purpose, how they work, etc.  We will be spending some time in the sprinklers again today and start to work on our crystal gardens.  Hopefully we will see some growth by Friday.  For breakfast today we will be having English muffins and cream cheese and for snack we will enjoy carrots with ranch dressing.

Wednesday – Today we will be taking a little fieldtrip to Point Cinema – leaving Crestwood at 9:00 a.m., then picking up at Shorewood after, and going to see The Tale of Despereaux – Rated G.  We will return to our schools around lunch time.  In the afternoon we will begin constructing our balloon powered cars and hopefully getting to enjoy some last minute summer fun in the sprinklers.  Today we will have yogurt and granola for breakfast, popcorn for mid morning snack, and grilled cheese sandwiches for snack.

Thursday – We will also start our study of bugs by going on a bug hunt and hopefully bringing some bugs back to the gym to study.  The children will also be given an opportunity to work on a Buggin’ Out word search and make a bug pin out of clay.  We will continue working on our balloon powered cars and hopefully be able to enjoy more sunshine outside in the sprinkler.  Today we will be having waffles and berries for breakfast and chex mix for snack.

Friday – Today we will continue our week of science by making some homemade ice cream.  Again, another messy project so please dress accordingly.  The children will have lots of fun playing in water (both indoors and outdoors) and making fossils in clay.  They will also make boats out of clay and work with them to get them to float.  The teachers will be talking to the children about sinking and floating and trying out different objects in the classroom to test for buoyancy.  We will also be packing up a lot of our supplies and equipment today as we will have limited space available for next week due to the custodians cleaning the gyms.  Today we will be having cereal and milk for breakfast and watermelon for snack.
